Learning Objectives
After this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Make the training initiative a positive experience for both Coaches and Trainees
- Use positive coaching strategies to follow up with Trainees as they progress through H & V’s new-hire curriculum
- Explain the payoffs of coaching efforts, to establish and/or reinforce Coach buy-in
- Demonstrate what effective Coaches do as they work with Trainees
- Avoid common coaching pitfalls
- Use the step-by-step communication process to strategically share information with Trainees
- Increase the clarity and focus of their communications to decrease misunderstandings, using the 8 Cs of effective communication
- Provide constructive feedback to Trainees to promote education and improvement
- Solicit constructive feedback from Trainees to evaluate and improve the Coaches’ training efforts
- Create an agreement with clearly defined expectations and action plans for both parties, to establish mutually beneficial ground rules for working together during the training process
- Effectively involve Trainees’ direct supervisors in the coaching process through collaboration
- Explain the differences that exist within different generations of workers
- Flexibly communicate across all generations
- Help Trainees see their learning and development efforts from a positive perspective during follow-up conversations between Coaches and Trainees

- What coaching is and is not for the Trainer
- Trainer/follow-up Coaching benefits to Trainees, Coaches, and your organization
- What Coaches do – roles and responsibilities
Coaching Plans
- Documenting Trainees’ on-going performance
- How to conduct a SWOT Analysis to identify a Trainee’s existing Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats
- How Gap Analysis can help Coaches and Trainees focus training on the most helpful areas
- How to set SMART goals for Trainees’ professional development
- How to build trust between Coaches and Trainees
- How to establish clear Coach-Trainee expectations for the working relationship and how to be sure that each sees the benefits of working together
Coaching Interactions
- A step-by-step explanation for how to increase communication effectiveness between Coaches and Trainees
- How to communicate to promote understanding and applied knowledge
- Performance Log for tracking Trainee progress and collecting performance information for on-going feedback
- How to give and receive constructive feedback
- How to use active listening to create shared understanding
- How to use the OSKAR coaching model to organize and discuss Trainee on-going performance, strengths, and improvement strategies, from a positive perspective
- How the GROW model can help Coaches discuss future professional development plans with Trainees
- Communicating across different generations
- Assessing and using different learning styles
Up to 30 students
- Virtual Classes will be a live, Instructor lead class in Zoom for Government, a virtual technical assistant VTA will be available to assist students with any technical issues, take roll, administer evaluations, and distribute certificates of completion. Course materials will be provided electronically.
- Onsite classes will be held at your location. The instructor will travel to you. Materials will be printed and shipped to your site. A sign-up sheet will be provided for student to enter their name (as they want it on their certificate) and the email address to send the certificate to. GSA travel costs will be added to the course fee. Contact us for a travel estimate.
- A minimum of 2 weeks lead time is needed for virtual classes, 3 weeks for onsite classes.
